Thanks to all who helped make Pruning Day on Saturday, March 23rd a phenomenal success!
Over 60 energetic volunteers enjoyed gorgeous weather at the blueberry patch. A large crew of Olivet Nazarene University students joined Pembroke community members and friends in pruning through the morning and early afternoon.
We were fortunate to have Barbara Norman, a lifelong blueberry farmer from Covert, Michigan, on site and providing valuable advice on pruning and other aspects of caring for the plants. Barbara arrived Friday and conducted a workshop that afternoon on wide-ranging topics about blueberry production and marketing.
Also Rev. Cindy Shepherd from Faith in Place presented the Rehoboth Blueberry Farm with a grant from the JR Albert Foundation to develop infrastructure improvements. The farm's partnership with Faith in Place is helping us transition into our next phase as caretakers of this valuable resource.
Related, and investing in the future health and vitality of the plants, revitalization pruning was performed on four rows, and the canes were chipped this year - instead of burning - to avoid making smoke and to create valuable mulch.
More photos and a video to come ... !
We will be pruning again on Saturday, April 6, 2019, gathering at the patch at 8:30 am, with breakfast and lunch served at the patch. Join us!
